How MFs churned large caps, mid-caps, and small caps in July 2026
Here is a quick look at how mutual funds churned their portfolios in July 2026 at a macro level. It is a macro view of all the mutual funds combined, and then a granular 360-degree view how the holdings shifted within large cap, mid-cap, and small cap stocks.
MUTUAL FUNDS - LARGE CAP CHURN IN JULY 2026
The table below captures the 5 large cap stocks seeing the biggest percent increase in MF holdings and the 5 large cap stocks seeing the biggest percent fall in holdings in July 2026.
| BIGGEST LARGE CAP BUYING (LHS) AND SELLING (RHS) BY MUTUAL FUNDS – JULY 2026 | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Most Bought Large Caps | Most Sold Large Caps | ||||
| Torrent Pharma | 149 | 88.69% | Titan Company | -49 | -6.30% |
| Adani Enterprises | 233 | 34.32% | Bajaj Finserv | -77 | -5.70% |
| Union Bank of India | 632 | 17.98% | Bank of Baroda | -256 | -5.05% |
| Indian Oil Corporation | 628 | 16.29% | Power Finance Corp | -141 | -4.62% |
| Canara Bank | 732 | 12.60% | Varun Beverages | -135 | -4.41% |
| Data Source: Fund Fact Sheets (Shares in lakhs) |
Let us look at the large cap buy side first. The Adani group continues to dominate the top 10 with 3 out of the list belonging to the Adani group. Mutual funds, of late, have been showing a preference within the healthcare space for branded generics. That explains the increase in MF holding in Torrent Pharma. Union Bank and Canara Bank are seen as relatively underpriced bets on the BFSI space, with the advantage of lower gross NPAs in the books.
What about the MF selling in large caps? The sharp selling in Titan could be attributed to concerns over falling gold prices as well as the expected resignation of N Chandrasekaran from Tata Sons. Some of them have been news specific. Lightening positions in BOB can be attributed more to the heavy compensation they had to pay out for governance lapses in one of their UAE client accounts. Mutual funds are going slow on infrastructure finance theme.
MUTUAL FUNDS - MID CAP CHURN IN JULY 2026
The table below captures the 5 mid-cap stocks seeing the biggest percent increase in MF holdings and the 5 mid-cap stocks seeing the biggest percent fall in holdings in July 2026.
| BIGGEST MID-CAP BUYING (LHS) AND SELLING (RHS) BY MUTUAL FUNDS – JULY 2026 | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Most Bought Mid-Caps | Most Sold Mid-Caps | ||||
| IDBI Bank | 176 | 366.67% | Lodha Developers | -88 | -47.83% |
| Rail Vikas Nigam | 63 | 95.45% | Kalyan Jewellers | -341 | -21.04% |
| Cochin Shipyards | 42 | 54.55% | Anthem Biosciences | -68 | -10.86% |
| Patanjali Foods | 53 | 37.32% | LTTS Ltd | -5 | -12.82% |
| Biocon Ltd | 782 | 31.12% | Info Edge | -134 | -10.76% |
| Data Source: Fund Fact Sheets (Shares in lakhs) |
With expectations of IDBI strategic sale back on the board, there is a resurgence of interest in IDBI Bank, which is natural. In the mid-cap digital space, mutual funds have singled out Meesho and PB Fintech for buying, which seems to have a business model that leans more towards sustained profitability. While Cochin Shipyards is a proxy for big government defence orders, Biocon seems to be more a play on their focus on biologics.
What about the MF selling in mid-caps? Some of the recent rally candidates like Nykaa, NMDC, and Info Edge came under selling pressure during the month of July 2026. Lodha Developers has seen some moderation in pre-sales growth, even as margins have stayed healthy. The BMC decision to restrict water supply to sites under construction amid a major water shortage in Mumbai has also had its impact on the stock of Lodha Developers.
MUTUAL FUNDS - SMALL CAP CHURN IN JULY 2026
The table below captures the 5 small cap stocks seeing the biggest percent increase in MF holdings and the 5 small cap stocks seeing the biggest fall in precent holdings in July 2026.
| BIGGEST SMALL CAP BUYING (LHS) AND SELLING (RHS) BY MUTUAL FUNDS – JULY 2026 | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Most Bought Small Caps | Most Sold Small Caps | ||||
| Hirect Ltd | 11 | Too Large | Vedanta Oil & Gas | -932 | -78.06% |
| Diamond Power Infra | 503 | Too Large | Vedanta Iron & Steel | -539 | -57.83% |
| Ideaforge Technology | 41 | 512.50% | SMS Pharma | -11 | -42.31% |
| Blue Jet Healthcare | 59 | 196.67% | Aeroplane Basmati | -20 | -38.46% |
| Optiemus Infracom | 12 | 150.00% | Nilkamal Ltd | -7 | -36.84% |
| Data Source: Fund Fact Sheets (Shares in lakhs) |
The small cap space, by default, happens to be a bottom-up stock specific story. Diamond Power Infra has been a turnaround story of debt reduction and profit increase, while Ideaforge has been a niche defence play. Blue Jet Healthcare indicates rising interest among mutual funds in pure play CDMO companies. The selling in Vedanta Oil and Vedanta Iron & Steel can be attributed more to index rebalancing and to monetize post-listing gains.
What is the overall picture that emerges from the fund buying and selling across capitalization? While the standard rate sensitive and infrastructure sectors are still being preferred, the month of July 2006 has seen some special niche areas like CDMO, biologics, niche defence plays etc.
