HOW NIFTY STOCKS PERFORMED IN AUGUST 2026?
For the month of August 2026, the Nifty was down -1.59% MOM and fell -2.56% yoy. The one-month and one-year returns are in the negative as the worsening situation in the Middle East has taken its toll on Indian large cap stocks.
Despite the strong performance on the GDP front, markets are worried about the Indian Rupee after the FCNR window closes. There are also concerns that RBI may hike rates to counter inflation.

HOW WE ARRIVED AT THE COMBINED RANKS FOR NIFTY STOCKS
- For a momentum view, we have considered 1-month returns and proximity to the high price (swing) to capture the short-term drivers of the stock price.
- For a more structural view, the 1-year returns and bounce from the yearly rows are considered. They capture the secular story in the large cap stocks in Nifty-50.
- The combined rank, on which companies are ranked, is the average of the above 4 factor ranks, making it an equal-weight mix of momentum and structural factors.
WHAT WE READ FROM THE NIFTY RANKINGS FOR AUGUST 2026?
While the August story has disappointment, most winners have sustained their edge.
- In the Top-20 stocks listed in the table, Kotak Bank gave the best 1-month return of 9.19%. Out of these 20 stocks, only 13 gave positive returns over 1 month.
- In the Top-20 stocks above, Shriram Finance and Hindalco gave best 1-year returns of 79.4% and 41.2%. Each of the top-20 stocks delivered positive returns over 1 year.
- The most prominent sector in the top-20 by combined rankings was the BFSI sector with 5 stocks; including Shriram Finance, Kotak Bank, Axis Bank, SBI, and ICICI Bank. There seems to be buying interest coming back into the private sector banks.
- Consumer facing stocks seemed to attract interest largely on the robust domestic demand story. Titan, Eternal, and Nestle India appear in the top-20 list based on the combined rank. Domestic demand has been the saving grace amid global turmoil.
- Three other sectors (auto, healthcare, and metals) sent 2 stocks each into the top-20 list. While the GST continues to favour auto demand at the entry level, metals has been more a play on the commodity cycle. Healthcare has been a safe haven.
- The 4 stocks at the bottom of the Nifty are, not surprisingly, Tata Motors PV, HDFC Bank, HUL, and ITC. Traditional FMCG is facing a margin squeeze, while HDFC Bank has been more about corporate governance pressures.
In terms of business group presence in the top-20, Adani group and Aditya Birla group have dominated; sending 2 companies each to the top-20 list.
