WHY MID-CAPS ARE A BETTER INDEX OF RESILIENCE
In our obsession with the Nifty and Sensex values, the one story we often miss out is the real story of resilience in the mid-caps. Here we look at mid-cap performance on 3 key parameters; 1-year returns, bounce from lows, and distance to peak. That captures long term returns, resilience, and swing. The ranking was done on 96 stocks as 4 stocks were FY26 IPOs, that did not have a 1-year track record. Here are the combined rankings.

OUR METHODOLOGY FOR THE MID-CAP STARS OF FY26
- First the stocks were ranked on 3 parameters viz, 1-year returns, bounce from yearly lows, and distance to 52-week high. The best performer ranks 1 on each parameter.
- Secondly, a combined rank is calculated as the simple average of the 3 ranks, and the mid-cap stock with the best combined rank comes on top in the table above.
- While there were 100 stocks in the Mid-cap 100, we removed Groww, Lenskart, LG Electronics, and ICICI Pru AMC; as these IPOs did not have 1 year track record.
READINGS FROM COMBINED RANKINGS OF MID-CAP STOCKS FOR FY26
- We will focus more on the sectoral mix of the combined rankings of the top 20 stocks, to get a perspective of which sectoral stories actually delivered value for the investors.
- Financial inclusion was the most prominent sector in mid-caps with MCX, AU Bank, AB Capital, Indian Bank, Fed Bank, and BSE appearing in that list.
- Healthcare was the other prominent mid-cap winner, with 4 key names including Laurus Labs, Glenmark, Lupin, and Aurobindo Pharma.
- Power was the other prominent sector with the top-2 being power equipment companies, and Waaree Energies being the only RE company in the list.
- Three major PSU commodity players viz, NALCO, OIL, and SAIL appeared in the top-20 list as rising commodity prices and government support gave them a leg-up.
- Despite the late sell-off in autos; Bharat Forge and Hero Moto found a place in the top-20. Nykaa, with its focused fashion strategy, was the only digital play in the list.
- What about the stocks at the bottom. They were largely stock-specific plays like IREDA, KPIT Technologies, Dixon Tech, IRCTC, SBI Cards, Tata Elxsi etc.
While financials dominated the mid-cap story in FY26, the underlying theme was not about broad BFSI, but a more focused play on financial inclusion in India.
