SMALL CAPS DELIVER THE GOODS IN AUGUST 2026

For the month of August 2026, Nifty Small-Cap 100 was up 2.43% MOM and 13.22% up yoy. In a volatile market, investors were clearly gravitating towards the small cap space in search of alpha. After all, they are less vulnerable to macro cycles.

From yearly lows, Nifty Small-Cap 100 bounced 32.2%, and after touching its 52-week high, the index is just 1.7% short of its peak. August 2026 actually saw the alpha hunting preference shift from mid-caps to small caps. This may be a rather decisive shift.

HOW TO INTERPRET THE COMBINED RANK SCORE?

    • The combined rank is an amalgam of 2 momentum factors (1-Month returns and Swing) and 2 secular factors (1-Year returns and Bounce). It gives a 360-degree view.

    • The average combined ranks of the top-5 small-cap stocks are lower than last month, indicating that leadership in small caps is becoming lot more decisive.

    • Unlike in large caps or mid-caps, the small cap rankings tend to change more often. This is a limitation as it reduces the predictive value of these rankings.

READING THROUGH THE AUGUST 2026 SMALL-CAP RANKINGS

Here we look at rankings statistically, and also at any sectoral themes implied.

    • The top-20 stocks had an average 1-month return of 14.0% and average 1-year return of 72.5%. If you look at the bounce from lows of these 20 stocks, it averaged an impressive 99.9%, while the swing from peak averaged a modest 5.0%.

    • The most prominent theme in top-20 is Financial Inclusion with 7 stocks; IFCI, City Union Bank, KVB, Anand Rathi, Capri Global, PNB Housing, and Piramal Finance. These are the smaller banks with niche customer bases and a much higher yield.

    • Another key sector in the top-20 was the Healthcare space with 4 stocks viz, Sai Life, Neuland Labs, Gland Pharma, and Piramal Pharma. Most of these are API and CDMO stories; with billions of dollars-worth drugs going off patents by 2030.

    • Two other sectors; Specialty Chemicals (Navin Fluorine, Aarti Industries); and Autos (Ather, Sona) are prominent. While chemicals are becoming more of a global demand and supply chain, auto preference is veering more towards the green segment.

    • If you look at small-cap stocks on 1-month returns; 42 stocks gave positive returns and 58 stocks gave negative returns. On 1-year returns; 54 stocks have given positive returns, indicating that momentum has shifted from mid-caps to the small caps.

    • Finally, a quick look at the stocks ranked low down among small-caps in overall rank. These are bottom-up names; INOX Wind, First Cry, RPOWER, KEC International, Cohance, Kaynes, Zensar, and Whirlpool. These stocks have been under stress.

The good news for small caps is that; August 2026 has seen a genuine shift in investor preference from mid-caps to small caps for the sake of alpha.
