MUTUAL FUND FLOWS APRIL 2026 – RAPID FIRE

In April 2026, open-ended mutual funds saw net inflows of ₹3,26,884 Crore across categories; best in the last 1 year. Here is a quick look at the key flow narratives.

Debt funds saw net inflows of ₹2,47,490 Crore dominated by inflows at the short end of the curve; specifically liquid funds, overnight funds and money market funds.

Equity Fund inflows were tad lower MOM at ₹38,440 Crore. Flows were led by Flexi Cap Funds, Small Cap Funds, Mid-Cap Funds, and Large & Mid-Cap Funds.

Hybrid funds saw net inflows of ₹20,872 Crore, largely due to revival of flows into arbitrage funds and robust flows into multi-asset allocation funds (MAAFs).

Passive funds saw net inflows lower at ₹20,082 Crore for April 2026, as flows into equity index ETFs and index funds scored over inflows into gold ETFs.

The NFOs tapered in April 2026 to ₹828 Crore, while gross SIP flows in April 2026 were lower MOM at ₹31,115 Crore.

Let us turn to flow significance as a share of net AUM.

MF FLOW SIGNIFICANCE ON NET AUM SIZE – MACRO PICTURE

When it comes to mutual fund flows; two things matter. The size of the flows and whether the swing flows were on the positive or negative side? Here is a quick macro picture.

Fund CategoryNet Flows (₹ in Crore)Net AUM (₹ in Crore)Flow / AUM Ratio
    Debt Funds2,47,490.0319,14,013.4912.93%
    Equity Funds38,440.2035,74,352.131.08%
    Hybrid Funds20,872.2211,63,602.861.79%
    Passive Funds20,082.0015,19,541.611.32%
    Grand Total #3,26,884.4581,71,510.084.00%

Debt fund flows clearly swung on the positive side, as did equity, hybrid and passive funds in the month of April 2026. Hybrid funds picture may be slightly skewed due to the presence of arbitrage funds, which moves in tandem with liquid funds. In terms of flow dominance, the month belonged to debt funds, equity funds, and alternate funds in that order.

ACTIVE DEBT FUNDS: POSITIVE FLOW DOMINANCE AT THE SHORT END

In the case of debt funds in April 2026, most funds at the short end of the yield curve saw positive flows, while funds at the long end of the yield curve came under pressure due or the risk of rate hikes amidst rising inflation.

    Debt FundsNet Flows (₹ Crore)Net AUM (₹ Crore)Flow/AUM Ratio
    Overnight Fund31,420.451,04,919.8629.95%
    Liquid Fund1,65,104.676,35,970.6925.96%
    Ultra Short Duration Fund15,651.871,29,712.0612.07%
    Credit Risk Fund1,317.6821,094.846.25%
    Money Market Fund20,642.593,34,924.356.16%

    Data Source: AMFI

As can be seen in the above table, the most significant inflows as share of AUM were all on the positive side (Overnight funds, Liquid funds, Ultra Short Duration funds, and Money Market funds); with credit risk funds being the sole exception. After the massive advance tax outflows in March 2026, April marked a resurgence of flows at the short end.

ACTIVE EQUITY FUNDS: STILL ABOUT ALPHA PLUS ALLOCATION

In the case of equity funds in April 2026, 9 out of the 11 fund categories saw net inflows while ELSS and Dividend Yield Funds saw net outflows. In terms of the 5 most significant flow categories, all were in the positive.

Equity FundsNet Flows (₹ in Crore)Net AUM (₹ in Crore)Flow / AUM Ratio
    Flexi Cap Fund10,147.855,59,366.311.81%
    Small Cap Fund6,885.903,92,772.181.75%
    Multi Cap Fund3,806.012,28,691.421.66%
    Mid Cap Fund6,551.404,75,011.501.38%
    Large & Mid Cap Fund4,490.493,35,218.091.34%

    Data Source: AMFI

If you look at the 5 categories of equity funds with the most significant flow to AUM ratio, all are on the positive side. However, 2 themes emerge from the analysis. Flexi cap funds, large & mid-cap funds, and multi-cap funds are all about diversification across capitalization. On the other hand; Small Cap Funds and Focused funds are about generating alpha by taking risk of portfolio concentration. Thematic funds and sectoral funds are not attracting attention to that extent.

HYBRID ALLOCATION FUNDS: RESURGENCE OF FLOWS INTO ARBITRAGE FUNDS

In the case of hybrid funds in April 2026; out of the 8 hybrid categories, 6 saw positive flows and 2 funds saw net outflows. The 5 most significant flow categories were all on the positive side.

Hybrid FundsNet Flows (₹ in Crore)Net AUM (₹ in Crore)Flow / AUM Ratio
    Arbitrage Fund12,378.462,70,562.364.58%
    Multi Asset Allocation Fund5,113.301,87,071.382.73%
    Children’s Fund225.4125,840.810.87%
    Aggressive Hybrid Fund1,488.642,51,394.060.59%
    Dynamic Asset Allocation/BAF1,773.073,18,622.040.56%

    Data Source: AMFI

If you look at the five categories of equity funds with the most significant flow to AUM ratio, the broad theme is about resurgence of flows into arbitrage funds. However, multi-asset allocation funds (MAAFs) continued to attract strong investor interest followed by BAFs and Aggressive Hybrids.

PASSIVE FUNDS: FLOWS INTO PRECIOUS METALS TAPER

In the case of passive funds in April 2026, all the 4 fund categories again saw net inflows. In terms of the most significant flow categories, here is the list.

Passive FundsNet Flows (₹ in Crore)Net AUM (₹ in Crore)Flow / AUM Ratio
    FOFs investing overseas1,660.9745,445.153.65%
    GOLD ETF3,040.311,78,110.321.71%
    Index Funds4,625.853,31,057.161.40%
    Other ETFs10,754.869,64,928.981.11%

    Data Source: AMFI

If you look at the top categories in terms of significance of flow / AUM ratio; Index ETFs and Index Funds are at the bottom despite seeing strongest flows. That is more due to the huge base of AUM of these two categories. Global investing is attracting a lot of interest.

The overall picture in April was a reverse of March, as far as debt funds are concerned. Regarding equities, there was an element of caution in the markets amid elevated levels of geopolitical risk.
