Here is a quick look at how mutual funds churned their portfolios in April 2026 at a macro level. We look at specific large cap, mid-cap, and small cap stocks bought and sold, without getting into the specific actions of individual mutual fund AMCs. All shareholding changes are represented in terms of (lakhs of shares), and ranked on percentage change.
MUTUAL FUNDS - LARGE CAP CHURN IN APRIL 2026
The table below captures the 5 large cap stocks seeing the biggest percent increase in MF holdings and the 5 large cap stocks seeing the biggest percent fall in holdings in April 2026.
| BIGGEST LARGE CAP BUYING (LHS) AND SELLING (RHS) BY MUTUAL FUNDS – APRIL 2026 | |||||

| Adani Enterprises | 71 | 19.14% | Wipro Ltd | -1,198 | -24.26% |
| Varun Beverages | 228 | 8.09% | Lodha Developers | -61 | -18.32% |

| Mazagon Dock Ship | 4 | 6.56% | Hindalco Industries | -194 | -7.55% |

If you look at the intensity of buying versus selling in the large caps, the bias was clearly towards selling. That is more like investors trying to book profits at higher levels, especially in stocks that had already seen a rally. Defence continues to be a favored pick with HAL and Mazagon Docks seeing positive traction from investors. DLF has been in action for some time as a play on revival in realty demand, especially among the upper segment Indians.
What about the MF selling? It clearly veered towards stocks that had rallied sharply in recent months. With the sharp rally in metals, there was aggressive profit booking in Vedanta Ltd and Hindalco. Vedanta selling can also be attributed to the recent demerger. Interestingly, fourth quarter results induced selling in stocks like Wipro and Bajaj Auto, where the quarterly numbers showed some pressure on performance.
MUTUAL FUNDS - MID CAP CHURN IN APRIL 2026
The table below captures the 5 mid-cap stocks seeing the biggest percent increase in MF holdings and the 5 mid-cap stocks seeing the biggest percent fall in holdings in April 2026.
| BIGGEST MID-CAP BUYING (LHS) AND SELLING (RHS) BY MUTUAL FUNDS – APRIL 2026 | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Most Bought Mid-Caps | Most Sold Mid-Caps | ||||
| Poonawala Fincorp | 390 | 68.30% | HUDCO | -148 | -29.25% |
| ITC Hotels | 424 | 43.62% | Bajaj Housing Finance | -24 | -7.59% |
| Patanjali Foods | 69 | 29.11% | L&T Tech Services | -4 | -8.70% |
| IREDA | 10 | 21.74% | GE Vernova T&D | -30 | -6.51% |
| Cochin Shipyards | 11 | 20.37% | Hitachi Energy | -1 | -5.26% |

If you want to understand why the Mid-Cap index touched a new high amidst the market volatility; it is there in the table above. The buying intensity has been sharply better than the selling intensity, which is in contrast to the large caps. The focus was more towards consumption stories in the mid-cap space, with ITC Hotels being a surprise inclusion. Defence remains a preferred story in the mid-caps too.
What about the MF selling? The selling was clearly biased in favor of stocks that had run up sharply in recent months. In the case of HUDCO and Bajaj Housing Finance, the selling in BFSI was not too surprising. However, GE Vernova and Hitachi India were among the star performers in the last 1 year, so this look more like a case of taking profits off the table.

There are two points to remember in small caps. Firstly, the base is often small so any spike or fall may get overstated in percentage terms. Secondly, it is much tougher to arrive at any sectoral interpretations in the case of small caps. Most of these small caps are bottom-up stories and the sectoral trends may often be misleading.
What is the overall picture that emerges from the fund buying and selling across capitalization? Mutual funds were taking profits off the table in the case of stocks that had outperformed in the last one year. But the pivot appears to be clearly in favor of mid-caps. These mid-caps not only had a good Q4 earnings season, but they are also less vulnerable to macro risks or leverage risks. That was the big pivot in the month of April 2026.
