Mutual Funds folio accretion picks up to 20.40 lakhs in June 2026

MUTUAL FUNDS ADD 20.40 LAKH FOLIOS IN JUNE 2026

Open ended funds added 20.40 lakh folios in June; compared to 12.63 lakh folios in May, and 14.01 lakh folios in April 2026. Even as the peace deal in the Middle East looks fluid, markets are betting on normalcy gradually returning to geopolitics. Folio accretion of open-ended funds was above 50 lakhs in January 2026 and by that comparison, June is sharply lower. Folio accretion was positive for all categories, and showed a visible bounce over May 2026. Here are the details of folio addition across categories in June 2026.

While debt funds added a robust 2.27 lakh folios, active equity funds added 9.46 lakh folios in the month of June 2026. Equity folio accretion improved in June. Hybrid funds added 3.01 lakh folios in the month, while passive funds turned around to adding 5.67 lakh folios in June, led by gold ETFs, silver ETFs, and overseas FOFs. Passive folios had contracted in April 2026 and had grown marginally in May. The pressure of folio contraction is visible more in debt index ETFs. Here are the top 5 in each category in terms of folio accretion ratio.

ACTIVE DEBT FUND FOLIOS: CONTRACTION AT LONG AND PROMINENT

For the month of June 2026, active debt funds added a total of 2.27 lakh folios or 2.60% over the previous month. Here are the 5 most significant folio changes by category.

Active Debt FundsTotal Folios JUN-26Total Folios MAY-26Folio Growth
    Liquid Fund33,61,64631,28,4427.45%
    Long Duration Fund74,79576,052-1.65%
    Credit Risk Fund2,08,1822,04,8911.61%
    Gilt Fund1,93,2491,95,627-1.22%
    Overnight Fund7,78,5877,69,2801.21%

Out of the 16 categories of debt funds, 12 categories saw folio contraction, while only 4 categories saw folio accretion. If you look at the top 5 active debt fund categories in terms of folio change in June 2026; Liquid funds, Credit Risk Funds, and Overnight Funds were positive, while the other significant folio shifts in Long Duration Funds and Gilt Funds were on the negative side. One trend appears to be greater caution at the long end.

The caution at the long end can be attributed to a much higher risk of rate hikes by the RBI amid higher consumer inflation reading. Also, the resumption of hostilities in the Middle East is likely to create elevated risks for India in terms of crude prices and the impact on the supply chain of oil intermediates. Long term debt caution reflected higher inflation risks.

EQUITY FUNDS FOLIO ACCRETION; AGAIN, ON ALLOCATION AND ALPHA

For the month of June 2026, active equity funds added a total of 9.46 lakh folios or 0.51% growth over the previous month. Here are the 5 most significant folio changes by category.

Active Equity FundsTotal Folios JUN-26Total Folios MAY-26Folio Growth
    Mid Cap Fund2,55,10,7332,52,57,2091.00%
    Small Cap Fund2,87,22,5632,84,49,2240.96%
    Large & Mid Cap Fund1,40,68,2931,39,42,5220.90%
    Flexi Cap Fund2,41,73,2822,39,64,1850.87%
    Multi Cap Fund1,17,24,6841,16,41,3820.72%

Like in the case of flows, even folio accretion was focused on the same 2 interesting themes. In the above list, flexi-cap funds, large & mid-cap funds, and multi-cap funds represent a diversification strategy across large caps, mid-caps, and small caps. At the same time; mid-cap funds and small cap funds represent alpha hunting; as an aggressive strategy. Most investors are preferring to hunt for alpha in small cap and mid-cap funds, as large caps are more vulnerable to the geopolitical risks. Large cap funds have continued to see tepid accretion in folios due to Kurtosis effect, pushing more of folio accretion to the index ETF side.

HYBRID FUNDS – FOLIO FOCUS STAYS ON TREASURY AND ALLOCATION

For the month of June 2026, hybrid allocation funds added a total of 3.01 lakh folios or 1.16% over the previous month. Here are the 5 most significant folio changes by category.

Hybrid / Solution FundsTotal Folios JUN-26Total Folios MAY-26Folio Growth

    Equity Savings Fund5,32,2415,28,7900.65%
    Children’s Fund32,81,07932,65,9240.46%

    Data Source: AMFI

If you look at the most significant funds in terms of folio accretion, all are on the positive side. Arbitrage Funds dominated; as they also saw some of the short-term folios shifting for better tax efficiency. Others that dominated in terms of high folio growth are the allocation fund categories like the multi asset allocation funds (MAAFs), Equity Savings Funds and Children’s Funds. MAAFs had seen a fall in momentum in recent months with the sharp fall in gold and silver, but this month has seen interest levels coming back.

PASSIVE FUNDS WITNESS ROBUST FOLIO ACCRETION

For the month of June 2026, passive funds saw accretion of 5.67 lakh folios or 1.00% over the previous month. Here are the 5 most significant folio changes by category.

In the last few months, we saw passive investors pivoting away from gold and silver ETFs to equity index ETFs and global passive funds. There are some subtle changes in June 2026. The latest month saw FOFs leading, albeit on a lower base. However, gold ETFs and silver ETFs were back in the reckoning as investors saw value at lower prices. However, folio contraction in debt index funds and debt index ETFs continued. It remains to be seen if precious metal ETFs can continue to attract investor interest!
