MUTUAL FUND FLOWS JULY 2026 – RAPID FIRE

In July 2026, open-ended mutual funds saw net inflows of ₹2,36,595 Crore across categories. Here is a quick look at the key flow narratives.

Debt funds dominated inflows at ₹1,87,511 Crore. With the tax pressures easing in June, the month of July saw a revival of corporate flows into short-term debt funds.

Equity Fund inflows were lower -14.8% MOM at ₹24,697 Crore. Small and mid-cap funds dominated inflows, while large cap funds saw net outflows in July 2026.

Hybrid funds saw net inflows of ₹11,869 Crore, largely due to positive flows into Arbitrage Funds, MAAFs, and BHFs; while equity savings and BAFs saw net outflows.

Passive fund inflows were lower at ₹12,517 Crore for July 2026, as strong equity index ETF flows were supported by Gold ETFs, index funds, and Silver ETFs.

The NFOs picked up some momentum in July 2026 to ₹2,022 Crore, while gross SIP flows in July 2026 inched up further to ₹31,961 Crore.

Let us turn to flow significance as a share of net AUM.

MF FLOW SIGNIFICANCE ON NET AUM SIZE – MACRO PICTURE

When it comes to mutual fund flows; two things matter. The size of the flows and whether the swing flows were on the positive or negative side? Here is a quick macro picture.

Fund CategoryNet Flows (₹ in Crore)Net AUM (₹ in Crore)Flow / AUM Ratio
    Debt Funds1,87,511.3219,33,342.329.70%
    Equity Funds24,697.3938,36,192.440.64%
    Hybrid Funds11,869.3312,28,424.030.97%
    Passive Funds12,517.0015,61,082.630.80%
    Grand Total #2,36,595.0385,59,041.422.76%

After the sell-off in debt funds in June to meet advance tax payouts; July saw a revival of flows into short-end debt funds. However, flows into active equity funds, hybrid funds, and passive funds were relatively subdued. Overall, retail investors are still cautious on markets.

ACTIVE DEBT FUNDS: FLOWS COME BACK AT THE SHORT END

In the case of debt funds in July 2026, 11 out of the 16 categories of debt funds still saw net outflows. Inflows dominated at the short end, but across longer-end debt funds there were concerns over possible rate hikes by the RBI in coming months.

    Debt FundsNet Flows (₹ Crore)Net AUM (₹ Crore)Flow / AUM
    Overnight Funds40,412.551,20,911.5833.42%
    Liquid Funds1,19,065.856,94,140.4217.15%
    Money Market Funds21,180.233,26,209.776.49%
    Ultra Short Duration Fund8,039.081,26,812.326.34%
    Long Duration Funds-618.2511,837.61-5.22%

    Data Source: AMFI

As can be seen in the above table, the real significant flows as share of AUM were all on the positive side (Overnight Funds, Liquid Funds, Money Market Funds, and Ultra-Short Duration Funds). Long Duration funds saw fairly significant outflows as the markets are expecting between 50 bps and 75 bps of rate hikes by the RBI, in FY27, to contain inflation.

ACTIVE EQUITY FUNDS: LONG ON SMALL CAPS, SHORT ON LARGE CAPS

In the case of equity funds in July 2026, only 7 out of the 11 fund categories saw net inflows while Large Cap Funds, surprisingly, saw net outflows in July 2026. In terms of the 5 most significant flow categories, all were in the positive.

    Equity FundsNet Flows (₹ Crore)Net AUM (₹ Crore)Flow / AUM
    Small Cap Fund7,767.504,41,099.911.76%
    Multi Cap Fund3,227.292,48,393.931.30%
    Mid Cap Fund6,192.315,23,091.451.18%
    Large & Mid Cap Fund3,425.343,64,199.150.94%
    Flexi Cap Fund4,709.086,00,155.010.78%

A cursory look at the 5 most significant in terms of Flow/AUM shows a mix of alpha hunting and broad portfolio allocation to reduce risk. The difference this month is that there seems to be a distinct preference for alpha hunting. Small Cap Funds and Mid-Cap funds dominated inflows, even as large cap funds saw outflows. Flexi-caps crossed ₹6 trillion AUM in July.

HYBRID ALLOCATION FUNDS: FLOWS INTO MAAF AND ARBITRAGE FUNDS

In the case of hybrid funds (including solutions funds) in July 2026; out of the 8 hybrid categories, only 5 saw positive flows. Equity savings funds, BAFs, and Conservative Hybrids saw outflows. Overall, 4 out of 5 most significant flow categories were on positive side.

    Hybrid FundsNet Flows (₹ Crore)Net AUM (₹ Crore)Flow / AUM
    Arbitrage Funds6,502.442,91,440.312.23%
    Multi Asset Allocation Fund3,753.382,03,297.911.85%
    Children’s Fund319.1327,737.421.15%
    Equity Savings Fund-477.1850,388.22-0.95%
    Aggressive Hybrid Fund1,986.292,63,776.410.75%

If you look at the five categories of hybrid funds with the most significant flow to AUM ratio, the broad theme remains focused on Arbitrage Funds and MAAFs. Despite the correction in gold and silver prices, MAAFs continued to attract interest. Arbitrage funds are seeing a lot of liquid money demand flows from HNIs, due to their distinct tax advantages.

PASSIVE FUNDS: LARGE CAP CAUTION LIMITS PASSIVE INTEREST

In the case of passive funds in July 2026; 3 out of the 4 fund categories saw net inflows. In terms of the most significant flow categories, here is the list.

Passive FundsNet Flows (₹ in Crore)Net AUM (₹ in Crore)Flow / AUM Ratio
    Other ETFs9,512.059,98,043.430.95%
    GOLD ETF1,558.751,73,301.400.90%
    Index Funds1,536.603,43,385.950.45%
    FOFs investing overseas-90.3946,351.85-0.20%

With the indices getting jittery over continued uncertainty in the Middle East, investors have been shunning large caps. That includes going slow on large cap index funds and index ETFs too. Hence passive demand has been subdued relative to previous month. Also, the lure of gold ETFs and silver ETFs are starting to fade with the relative calm in prices.

Overall, debt funds defined inflows in July 2026, largely due to the advance tax withdrawals coming back. However, investors are cautious at the longer end of the yield curve due to rate hike expectations. On the equity front, the action is clearly shifting from large caps to mid and small caps. Alpha hunting is also stealing a march over diversification demand.
