SERNET Research Desk1 October 20262 min read

Why did Nifty fall 6% in September 2026? Brent jumped 14% to about $103, the rupee weakened and every major sector ended lower, yet SIPs hit a record.

*This review was published retrospectively in November 2026 and is dated to the start of the following month. Some figures, such as AMFI flows, were released after month end and are included for completeness. Index returns are as reported in HSBC Mutual Fund's monthly Equity Market Review unless stated otherwise.*

    Equity and sectors

September was the sharpest monthly fall of 2026. Several pressures hit at once:

Every major sectoral index ended lower. IT fell about 11% and Autos about 9%. Capital Goods, Realty and Banks each fell about 6%. Defensive sectors held up better: FMCG fell about 3% and Utilities about 1%.

    Debt and rates

Oil above $100, a weaker rupee and tighter global policy raised expectations of higher interest rates in India. Bond yields came under pressure, and debt funds saw large outflows. The stage was set for RBI's October policy meeting.

Mutual fund flows (AMFI, September 2026)

    MetricSeptember 2026August 2026
    SIP contributions₹32,490 crore₹32,297 crore
Net equity fund inflows₹38,307 crore₹29,329 crore
Industry AUM₹82.64 lakh crore₹87.08 lakh crore
Industry net flowsOutflow of about ₹1.33 lakh crore—

    • Equity inflows rose about 31% to a five-month high. Investors bought more into the fall, especially through small-cap funds (about ₹9,039 crore).
    • Multi-asset allocation funds received inflows for the 61st month in a row.
    • Industry AUM fell about ₹4.4 lakh crore, mainly because of market losses and withdrawals from debt funds.

    Gold, silver and global

    • Oil was the main driver. Brent was up about 70% for the year.
    • Global markets turned risk-averse as central banks signalled tighter policy.

    What investors may note

    • Sharp market falls are part of equity investing. Investors who kept their SIPs going bought units at lower prices.
    • Defensive sectors and diversified portfolios fell less. Diversification matters most in months like this.
    • Rising interest rates affect debt funds of different durations differently. Check that your debt holdings match your time horizon.

    • RBI policy decision: 7 October
    • Q2 FY27 company results begin
