ARRIVING AT THE COMBINED RANKS FOR NIFTY STOCKS
- For a momentum view, we have considered 1-month returns and proximity to the high price (swing) to capture the short-term drivers of the stock price.
- For a more structural view, the 1-year returns and bounce from the yearly rows are considered. They capture the secular story in the large cap stocks in Nifty-50.
- The combined rank, on which companies are ranked, is the average of the above 4 factor ranks, making it an equal-weight mix of momentum and structural factors.
WHAT WE READ FROM THE NIFTY RANKINGS FOR SEPTEMBER 2026?
Here are key takeaways from Nifty performance for the period ending September 2026.
- In the Top-20 stocks listed in the table, Adani Ports gave the best 1-month return of 8.08%. Out of these 20 stocks, only 5 gave positive returns over 1 month.
- In the Top-20 stocks list, BSE Ltd and Shriram Finance gave best 1-year returns of 49.8% and 48.8%. A total of 17 of 20 stocks in the top-20 gave positive returns.
- The most prominent sector in the top-20 by combined rankings was financial intermediation with 4 stocks; including Kotak Bank, Shriram Finance, BSE, and Axis Bank. Amid a possible rate hike in October, the 3 mega banks were off the radar.
- Healthcare stocks rallied on the back of a defensive play, CDMO prospects, and drugs going off global patents. Sun Pharma, Reddy Labs, and Apollo Hospitals figured in the top-20 list. These stocks scored high on structural longer-term returns.
- Metals is another stock with 3 representations in the top-20 list. Integrated metal companies like JSW Steel, Hindalco, and Tata Steel gained sharply on a global metals rally, strong domestic demand, and consistent improvement in net realizations.
- There were 2 other broad themes. The list includes 3 holding companies (L&T, Adani Enterprises, Grasim), where investment value is not fully reflected. Customer facing names like Titan, Eternal, and Indigo also represented strong domestic demand.
- The stocks at the bottom are hardly a surprise. RIL and Jio Finance are part of the sharp correction in Reliance group companies. Tata Motors and Maruti reflect risks of higher cost of funds. Infosys and TCS are at multi-month lows due to the AI-effect. Above all, HUL and Tata Consumer reflect the pressure on FMCG sales and margins.
In terms of business group presence in the top-20, Adani group, Tata group, and Aditya Birla group have dominated; sending 2 companies each to the top-20 list.
