WHAT THE COMBINED RANK SCORE ACTUALLY TELLS US

    • The combined rank combines 2 momentum factors (1-Month returns and Swing) and 2 secular factors (1-Year returns and Bounce). This gives a consolidated view.

    • The average combined ranks of the top 20 mid-cap stocks are lower compared to the previous month, showing that confidence in mid-caps may be gradually waning.

    • The above ranking is just about past month data, but has predictive value as evident from the fact that leadership themes have been repetitive over recent months.

WHAT THE AUGUST 2026 MID-CAP RANKINGS TELL US?

Here we look at the rankings statistically, and then at the sectoral themes implied.

    • The top-20 stocks had an average 1-month return of 9.6% and average 1-year return of 58.2%. If you look at the bounce from lows of these 20 stocks, it averaged an impressive 80.4%, while the swing from peak averaged a modest 6.1%.

    • The most prominent theme in the top-20 is Financial Inclusion with 5 stocks in the list including MCX, Paytm, Motilal Oswal, AU Bank and Federal Bank. These are robust India stories reflecting better risk channelling of savings into productive assets.

    • Another key sector in the top-20 was the Healthcare space with 3 stocks viz, Aurobindo Pharma, Laurus Labs, and Glenmark. Healthcare is not just defensive, but is also an aggressive story with billions dollars-worth drugs going off patents by 2030.

    • Among other sectors; customer facing (Idea, Lenskart, Nykaa); and metals (APL Apollo, SAIL, NALCO) are prominent. Customer facing sectors are monetizing digital footprint, while metals are more of a global play on demand-supply mismatch.

    • If you look at mid-cap stocks on 1-month returns; 41 stocks gave positive returns and 59 stocks gave negative returns. On 1-year returns; 56 stocks have given positive returns, indicating that mid-caps may be losing short-term momentum.

    • Finally, a quick look at the stocks ranked low down among mid-caps in overall rank. It is almost a repeat of previous month comprising of; PI Industries, RVNL, Dabur, Blue Star, UPL, Colgate Palmolive, Patanjali, Voltas, KPIT Tech, and IRCTC.

While investors are gravitating towards mid-caps for alpha, the favourable momentum in mid-caps appears to be waning.
