WHAT DOES THE INDIA VIX ACTUALLY TELL US?
The India VIX, which was launched by the NSE in 2003 on the lines of the CBOE index, is also referred to as the Fear Index. It shows the concerns that traders in the market have about the likely increase in volatility. Typically, in times of geopolitical risk, or in times of war or economic strife; the VIX tends to go up sharply. The table below captures the movement of the India VIX since the US-Iran war started on 28-February.

HOW TO INTERPRET THE LEVELS OF THE VIX IN INDIA?
- It must be noted here that VIX is not a measure of which way the market will go; but it is a measure of fear (whether volatility will go up or not).
- Normally, a VIX of under 15 is considered to be normal and stable. In fact, levels of around 10-12 indicate the possibility of a sharp revival in the markets.
- Markets get into real volatile zone when VIX crosses 20. The range from 20 to 30 is normally the most crucial zone, where a sharp direction gets decided.
- VIX sustaining above the 30 levels, is normally crisis zone. The last 2 times VIX crossed 60 was in 2008 GFC and 2020 COVID crisis; when VIX went above 60 eventually.
WHAT DOES VIX TELL US ABOUT CURRENT PORTFOLIO ALLOCATION?
While predicting the future of political events is not in our realm, here is what the VIX is indicating and here is what investors should be focussing on.
- VIX is a short-term estimate of volatility and the indications are that the markets are expecting the war to end soon or, at least, some sense of normalcy to return
- The way the volatility has gone up in the last 1 month, it indicates that even if the war is over, the oil & gas crisis will hold the VIX at higher levels for longer.
- For investors, the one indication is that, it is safer to have hedged positions in the market, especially if you are looking at large cap equity positions.
- It is time for individuals to re-evaluate their current asset allocation. Will equities continue to flatter like the post-COVID period, or does this call for a shift to debt?
- FPI selling has been consistent at $(12.2) billion in March 2026. FPIs expect that even if the market bounces, the rupee may continue to be under pressure.
- Portfolios with a greater proportion of high-beta stocks / high-beta funds must do an evaluation if it is time to shift to defensives for the medium term.
- It is hard to predict the direction of the war. The VIX says that even if the war ends, the impact may continue longer. It is time to re-look at portfolio asset allocation for now.
