NSE saw nearly 29.89% of its issue size absorbed by anchor investors, a day ahead of its IPO opening. NSE collected a sum of ₹6,746 crore from 189 anchor investors. FPIs accounted for about 43% of the book while the domestic investors accounted for 53% of the anchor book. Some of the prominent FPIs in the anchor book were Norges Bank, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, Fidelity, and Goldman Sachs. Among domestic investors, LIC was a major anchor investor. At ₹22,568 crore, the NSE IPO will be among the biggest IPOs in India, despite its truncated size.
SEBI has again come down heavily on matching F&O trades to show artificial losses to reduce the taxes on gains. Two entities; PRRSAAR Sampada and Chaubara Eats along with some key persons involved, have been asked to disgorge ₹28 crore of such illegitimate gains. Even in the Jane Trading case, SEBI had made similar allegations of matching trades. The investigation had been based on surveillance alerts raised by the NSE. These activities were prevalent in several stocks like BDL, Godrej Consumer Godrej Properties, KFIN, 360-One, Waree Energies, Swiggy etc.
As the Tata Sons board meets on 17-September, there are some pressing items on the agenda. The listing debate has taken a new dimension after RBI rejected the demand of Tata Sons to surrender its CIC registration. It is also expected that some of the directors of Tata Sons may ask Chandra to move back as the CEO of Tata Sons, although Noel Tata continues to be averse to the idea. With the listing issue coming up, Tata Sons may need an experienced hand for the job. Also, the impasse at the Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) may delay the selection of the chairman of Tata Sons.
The final number of FCNR (B) flows stood at $133 billion, nearly $5.7 billion higher than the last figure reported by the RBI. It may be noted that the entire swapping of dollars was only completed on 11-September, so that is when the final picture emerged. The dollar surge has led to a surge in rupee liquidity by nearly ₹12 trillion due to the rupee-dollar swapping facility. Also, the surge in dollar flows have not really helped in strengthening the rupee as it has now closed near the ₹96/$ mark. This also creates an overhang of a huge dollar outflows after 3 and 5 years.
Brokerages are of the view that the MDR imposed on UPI transactions above ₹2,000 would help collect nearly ₹20,000 crore, which will benefit companies like Paytm, Phone Pe, Pine Labs etc. For now, the MDR has only been imposed on P2M (person to merchant) transactions above ₹2,000. The MDR will not apply to P2P transfers. Also, in case of capital market UPI transactions, the MDR is substantial lower. While the MDR has to be borne by the merchants, it would be naïve to believe that the merchants will not find a roundabout way to push the charge back to the customer.
In the month of August, Indian mutual funds invested close to ₹8,884 crore across 18 IPOs. The 2 IPOs to attract maximum mutual fund buying were the IPO of Dhoot Transmission at ₹3,303 crore and Shiprocket IPO at ₹1,196 crore. Among other key IPOs; mutual funds invested nearly ₹928 crore in Milky Mist IPO, ₹673 crore in Molbio Diagnostics, ₹425 crore in Horizon Industrial Parks, and ₹402 crore in Lalithaa Jewellery. While FPIs have been relatively cautious on Indian equities, the domestic mutual funds and the insurance companies appear to be more optimistic.
With the agreement for a shipbuilding cluster in Maharashtra, the stock of Mazagon Docks is back in focus. The stock has already been a favourite for some time due to the big order roll out expected from the government. Mazagon Docks will participate as the anchor shipyard for the project. The annual shipbuilding capacity will be 1.2 million gross tonnes. This will expand the business focus of Mazagon Docks beyond warships and submarines. The idea of the shipbuilding cluster is to create the complete supply chain with backward and forward integrations for the industry.
Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) will partner with Reliance and Adani group for the ₹9,000 crore model modular reactor. The nuclear reactor will have a capacity of 300 MW. The IP for the project will be held by a special purpose vehicle (SPV). The indicative is roughly ₹30 crore per MW, taking the total capital outlay to ₹9,000 crore. At a macro level, India has targeted capacity of 100 GW of nuclear capacity by year 2047. It still remains to be seen how this energy is used in commercial purpose and the extent of demand for the same. These are early days.
