In a big relief, Vodafone Idea has got a reduction in its total AGR dues to the DOT to the extent of ₹23,649 crore. However, it still needs to pay AGR dues of ₹64,046 crore, which will certainly stress its finances. As per the updated payment schedule, the moratorium for Vodafone Idea will go on till FY31; and it will pay, at least, ₹100 crore each year between FY32 and FY35. Post-FY35, full amount has to be cleared in 6 equated instalments. This relief came after the Supreme Court had allowed the government to take into account grievances pertaining to AGR calculations.
In a significant move, the Indian government has banned testing of Claude Mythos in Indian banks and insurance companies. The Claude Mythos, launched by Anthropic, had raised concerns among Indian policymakers due to its ability to hack security systems much faster than human beings. This would expose client data and client funds to a high level of vulnerability. The stance of the Indian government will be reviewed after US Sandbox results are out. Claude Mythos is currently being tested in a closed-user group. Future access will be subject to regulatory clearance.
In its crucial meeting on May 08, 2026, the Tata Trusts will review the losses on airlines and digital; listing of Tata Sons and the renewal of Chandrasekharan’s term for a third time. The Trusts will also debate about giving an exit route or monetization route to the Shapoorji Pallonji group, which holds 18.4% in Tata Sons. While Noel Tata is keen to keep Tata Sons private, other directors are open to the idea of listing. The final decision will rest on the RBI. There are also concerns over the combined loss of ₹29,000 crore in FY26, posted by Indian Airlines and Tata Digital.
Rupee tumbled to a new low of ₹95.33/$ on Thursday before closing stronger at around ₹94.92/$ on the back of RBI intervention. After the RBI had moved in 3 weeks back to curb NOF positions of banks and speculative positions against the rupee, the rupee had rallied sharply. However, all those gains have been wiped out now. The big trigger for the fall in the rupee came from crude prices surging to above $120/bbl as the blockade of the Straits of Hormuz continued due to the failure of the US-Iran talks. FPIs have sold equities worth $20.2 billion, so far, in calendar 2026.
To keep its agricultural spirits high, India imported nearly 37 lakh tonnes of Urea since the West Asia crisis began 2 months back. The robust supply of fertilizers has kept the Kharif output on target, although a lot will still depend on the much-feared El Nino effect this year. IMD and SKYMET have already predicted deficit rainfall this year, well below the normal range of 96% to 104% of long period average (LPA). Government has been aggressive in procuring fertilizers to avoid an agricultural crisis in India. Global tenders for phosphatic fertilizers have also been floated.
US real GDP growth data is out for Q1-2026 and it has come in better than expected at 2.0%. The GDP growth has been led by private consumption and investment demand. The fourth quarter of 2025 had seen real GDP growth in the US falling to 0.5%, so Q1 surely comes as relief. This is tad below the street estimates at 2.3%. Much of the growth was triggered by corporate spending on artificial intelligence, software, and data centre infrastructure. Consumer spending was up 1.6% in Q1, and that is critical since consumption accounts for nearly 70% of GDP growth in the US.
Tata Power Renewable Energy plans to invest ₹6,500 crore to set up a 10 GW photovoltaic ingot, wafer manufacturing facility. It will be executed in 2 tranches of 5 GW each. Apart from generating revenues for the company, the project also offers some key strategic benefits to the company. These benefits include an early-mover advantage in a capacity constrained domestic market as well as greater supply security for downstream operations. Over time, this vertical is also likely to become the high margin business of the group. Payback period is around 5 years.
With the RBI going all-out to anchor the rupee, its net short position on the dollar has touched a new high of $103 billion. Nearly half of this position is in 1-year bucket while the other half is in the above one-year category. Between February and March, the RBI net short on the dollar was up nearly 33%. Amid surging crude prices, the RBI has been aggressively defending the rupee in the offshore and the onshore market. There are concerns that high oil prices could lead to a wider than expected current account deficit (CAD) in FY27. It could get aggravated by sparse capital flows.
