Equity markets in February 2026 saw global war tensions, oil surge, and gold rally. Discover top mutual fund returns, best equity funds & multi-asset winners.

HOW EQUITY MARKETS PERFORMED IN FEBRUARY 2026

February 2026 did give you the feeling of being a high-stakes thriller. On the one hand, there was strong data flows in India from the core sector, fiscal deficit, and GDP growth. However, there were some key risk factors building up overseas. The US and Israel have launched an all-out war against Iran and the extent of retaliation is not yet known.

With the Iran threatening to block the Straits of Hormuz, India could start to feel the pinch. Nearly 50% of India’s crude oil came through the Straits of Hormuz in February 2026 and about 15% of Indian exports went through the Straits of Hormuz in February. That clearly shows that India has high stakes in what is happening between Iran and the US.

BIG DRIVERS OF EQUITY MARKETS IN FEBRUARY 2026

The month was a tug-of-war between positive domestic signals and the negative impact of the global jitters. While the Nifty closed -0.56% lower, the smaller stocks stole the show with Mid-Caps (+1.17%) and Small-Caps (+0.30%). Clearly, most of the macro damage appears to have hit the large caps, and not so much the small and mid-caps. Let us look at the key factors on the positive and negative side of the market for the month of February.

    1. With the Bulls: A reform-heavy Union Budget and a landmark Indo-US trade deal provided the much-needed tailwinds for the Indian economy.
    2. With the Bears: Markets were spooked by the "Anthropic AI scare" and its impact on IT outsourcing; apart from the uncertainty surrounding the US tariff judgements.
    3. Decisive Safe Haven Shift: Gold and silver were back to growth times, while oil prices surged more than 20% from the $60/bbl lows; due to tensions in the Straits of Hormuz.

Clearly, the macro situation looks very mixed at this juncture with the global headwinds apparently outweighing the domestic tailwinds.

TOP PERFORMING ACTIVE EQUITY FUNDS FOR FEBRUARY 2026

Let us focus on the best among the best. In terms of returns, funds in the large cap category, large & mid-cap category and the flexi cap category delivered strong returns with well managed risks. Amid the geopolitical uncertainty and the global risks, large caps did give good returns over a 1-year period. Here is a list of the best among the best.

    CategoryTop Fund1-Year Returns5-Year Returns
    Large CapNippon India Large Cap16.89%18.27%
Large & Mid CapMotilal Oswal Large & Mid Cap18.39%21.24%
    Flexi CapQuant Flexi Cap Fund13.40%21.68%

Let us also steal a quick glance at the mid-cap and small cap segment. Despite the pressure in terms of shorter-term returns, which is understandable, the 5-year track records for these funds remain amazingly robust.

For instance, Motilal Oswal Mid-Cap Fund led the 5-year chart at 23.86%, despite a dip in the last one year. Similarly, Quant Small Cap Fund was the star among small caps, as it continues to dominate with staggering CAGR returns of 26.19% over 5 years.

    NON-EQUITY FOCUS ON MULTI-ASSET FUNDS

Here we are talking about the hybrid funds and the debt funds; and to some extent the passive funds also. The ringleader was, undoubtedly, the Multi-Asset Allocation Fund (MAAF) category, thanks to its exposure to precious metals (gold and silver). There is the Quant Multi-Asset Fund with impressive returns of 30.45% in the last 1 year, triggered by the relentless in gold and silver. Among arbitrage funds, returns are steady across the board, but Invesco India Arbitrage Fund, which made the best of volatility with 6.80% over 5 years.

What about bond funds? The bond yields remained slightly elevated at around 6.7%, following the Union Budget's higher gross borrowing limit of ₹17.2 trillion. The gilt funds pack was led by ICICI Pru Gilt Fund at 6.96% CAGR over 5 years. Steller returns of 27.58% was delivered by the BOI Credit Risk Fund, although it is best to be cautious about outliers.

FOUR THINGS WE READ IN FEB-26 MUTUAL FUND RETURN RANKINGS

There are 4 key takeaways from the mutual fund rankings for February 2026.

    1. Asset allocation has worked in India. Multi-asset funds are outperforming because they are not just relying on stocks. The surge in gold and silver has protected these portfolios from equity volatility. That is asset allocation benefits at its best.
    2. Large Caps are Healing; and it looks like a mean reversion for large caps. One can call it a "weak base" recovery in large caps. However, large caps are also becoming safer growth bets as mid-caps and small caps increasingly face valuation and business model scrutiny.
    3. The "Alpha" is Real among the gainers. If you look at the top 3 funds in almost every category, they not only beat their peers; they also got the better of the benchmark indices. Active management is still working in the Indian context.
    4. Finally, the most important takeaway from the mutual fund rankings. The winners of 2026 look a lot similar to the winners of 2025. Consistency in fund return leadership remains the most reliable predictor of future success, making fund selection easier.

Here is our final take on the MF returns story. The "Anthropic AI scare" might dominate the headlines. However, the 5-year returns of mutual funds remind us that wealth is built by staying the course, not by trying too hard to beat the market!
