Being a trading company, the sales figure may be misleading, although it has been rather erratic. However, profit margins have been under 1.6%, which is generally the trend for trading companies, as the top line tends to limit the PAT margins.
At the current issue price of ₹99 per share, the valuation of the company is at a P/E ratio of 19.1X in terms of latest year EPS of ₹5.18. The ROE is relatively comfortable at over 15%, but the PAT margins being under 2% would be a limit on profit growth. That is something investors need to watch out for.
The core business model of the company is that of a trading company, but even for a trading company, the PAT margins are very low on a consistent basis. The company does have a strong distributor network and economies of scale. However, investors need to really take a call on whether this could make a substantive difference to the valuation of the stock.
